Primary Purpose of the Role
The Mechanical Designer / Technical Writer is responsible for developing and interpreting technical documentation, including detailed engineering drawings, risk assessments, and design specifications. The role requires a blend of technical design expertise and strong communication skills to ensure that complex technical information is conveyed clearly and accurately. The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and will be capable of assessing technical drawings to identify and mitigate potential risks.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design
  • Create, modify, and review detailed mechanical drawings and designs using CAD
  • software.
  • Ensure that all designs comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other stakeholders to develop design solutions that
  • meet project specifications and objectives.
Technical Writing
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including user manuals, operating
  • instructions, maintenance guides, and safety protocols.
  • Translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and user-friendly documents.
  • Ensure all technical content is accurate, up-to-date, and consistent with the latest project developments.
Risk Assessment
  • Conduct thorough reviews of technical drawings and designs to identify potential
  • risks.
  • Perform technical risk assessments to evaluate the safety, reliability, and performance of mechanical systems and components.
  • Recommend design modifications or mitigation strategies to address identified risks.
  • Document and report on risk assessment findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, project managers, and quality assurance personnel, to ensure alignment on technical requirements and documentation standards.
  • Participate in design reviews, providing feedback and suggestions based on risk assessment and technical analysis.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Continuous Improvement
  • Stay updated on the latest industry trends, tools, and best practices in mechanical design and technical writing.
  • Proactively seek opportunities to improve the quality and efficiency of technical documentation and risk assessment processes
Key Knowledge & Experience
  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in designsoftware (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and other design tools.
  • Strong technical writing skills with experience in creating technical documentation.
  • Experience in conducting technical risk assessments and developing risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to interpret and analyse complex technical drawings and designs.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulatory requirements related to mechanical design.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities.
